Dr. Josephine Nongmaithem is a social work academic, researcher, and development practitioner with experience spanning higher education, rural development, social inclusion, climate change, disaster resilience, and community-based interventions. She currently serves as Assistant Professor in the Department of Social Work at Rajagiri College of Social Sciences (Autonomous), Kochi. Her professional journey reflects a unique blend of academic scholarship, policy engagement, programme implementation, and grassroots development practice.

Prior to joining Rajagiri, Dr. Nongmaithem served as Assistant Professor at the College of Social Work, Imphal, affiliated with Manipur University, and subsequently as District Coordinator (Social Inclusion and Social Development) at the Manipur State Rural Livelihoods Mission (MSRLM), Department of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj, Government of Manipur. In this capacity, she was entrusted with state-level programme management responsibilities relating to social inclusion, gender mainstreaming, convergence of local self-governments with community base3d organisations, Food, Nutrition, Health and WASH (FNHW), and community institution strengthening.

In recognition of her scholarly contributions, Dr. Nongmaithem received the Best Research Paper Award in the Young Researcher Category at the Fifth World Congress on Disaster Management (WCDM) held at IIT Delhi for her paper titled “A Study of Community Vulnerability and Capacity in the Context of Climate Change in Majuli, Assam.” The award was presented by Shri G. Kishan Reddy, the then Hon’ble Union Minister of Tourism, Culture and Development of North Eastern Region, Government of India.

PROFESSIONAL CONTRIBUTIONS

  • Played an active role in the PRI–CBO Universalisation and Convergence Project implemented jointly by Kudumbashree National Resource Organisation and Manipur State Rural Livelihoods Mission (MSRLM).
  • Contributed to the writing and documentation of the publication “Exemplar Case Studies on the Impact of Women's Empowerment Initiatives on Community Development”, showcasing transformative stories of women-led development and community empowerment.
  • Participated in specialised exposure and training programmes on rural development at Orvakal Mandal Podupu Lakshmi Ikya Sangam (OMPLIS), Andhra Pradesh, a federation of women’s Self-Help Groups recognised for its work in poverty alleviation, women’s empowerment, and community-led development.
  • Contributed to the implementation of Food, Nutrition, Health, Sanitation and WASH (FNHW) initiatives under MSRLM.
  • Took a major role in developing the State Policy on Food, Nutrition, Health and WASH in Manipur.
  • Received specialised training on Village Prosperity Resilience Plans (VPRP) and contributed to the development of the State Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for VPRP implementation.
  • Served as a member of evaluation committees for the selection of agencies undertaking baseline, endline, and impact assessment studies under MSRLM.
