Library collection of ‘Suhrudh Sadhan’ Public library, Aluva was re-organised with the collaboration of Department of LIS students and inaugurated on 24th August, 2023. The students from 1st semester M.Lib.I.Sc actively coordinated and participated in the re-organisation and setting up of the library as functional.
BOOKS FOR HEALING: BOOK DONATION FOR PSYCHIATRY WARD OF MEDICAL COLLEGE, ERNAKULAM
The Library & Information Science department in association with Fr. Moses Library and National Service Scheme Unit of the Rajagiri College of Social Sciences created a noble initiative that bring knowledge, comfort and inspiration by organizing a book collection campaign for making up a library in the Psychiatry Ward at Ernakulam Medical College. A book collection drive was conducted on the college in which students donated their books and other information sources including fiction, non-fiction, general books, self-help and motivational books so that the patients can relieve, learn and discover themselves. The collected books were donated to the authority of Medical College Psychiatry Ward on 8th July 2023 by Fr. Shinto Joseph, Assistant Director and Library Warden along with Neethu Mohanan, HOD of the Department of Library and Information Science and Librarian Vijesh P. V
Department of Library and Information science students and teachers, Rajagiri College of Social Sciences (Autonomous) were part of the Pokkali farming at Nayarambalam, Vypin on 27th July 2022. It was a one-day program organized for planting seedlings. The program highlighted the farming culture, lifestyles, and beautiful landscapes of the locality. As part of the Rajagiri Outreach and ENCON Club, the students were able to be a part of this amazing farming, and understand the Organisation, Grassroute, and their support and activities for the farmers.
RE-ORGANISATION OF VAILOPPILLI PULARI GRANTHASHALA
Library collection of Vailoppilli Pulari Granthashala was re-organized with the collaboration of Dept of LIS and inaugurated on 24th April 2022.
The Department of Library and Information Science had started the third batch of “Diploma In Library Automation” from 15th October 2023. The course cover in detail about the topics on Linux, KOHA and DSpace. It is a 6 month programme with 12 classes on 1st and 3rd Sundays of every month. The participants have to qualify the exams of respective modules and Certificates will be provided after the successful completion of the diploma.
View Image GalleryLANTERN is an initiative coordinated by the Department of Library & Information Science of RCSS with the aim of assisting students in enhancing their reading habits. This programme is designed for students to offer reviews on the books they have read. The programme offers a forum for students to augment and strengthen their intellectual abilities, engage in critical analysis, and better their communication and presentation skills by creating concise video reviews. LANTERN offers a platform for students from any department of our college to publicly share their thoughts and reviews, drawing from their own unique perspectives and ideas.

The Department has launched a Capacity Building Programme called "Tools and Resources for Academic Writing" aimed at students, faculty members, research scholars, and LIS professionals from our college and other institutions. The programme offers 7 distinct courses, covering topics such as Bibliometrics, E-Resources and E-Databases, AI Tools for Academic Research, Data Analysis using Excel and SPSS, Academic Writing, Reference Management Softwares like Zotero and Mendeley, and Plagiarism Checking Software Turnitin. The programme commenced on December 16, 2023, featuring an inaugural session on Bibliometrics. Over 50 participants from diverse universities and institutions actively engaged in the programme. The initial phase of the programme concludes on May 18th, 2024.
‘A LIFE SHAPED BY MANY STORIES’
As part of the end of the READER’S RETREAT 2024 event, an invitees talk by Adv. Saran Rajeev on the topic ‘A Life Shaped by Many Stories’ was conducted on 21st June 2024 at 2 pm in the Carmel hall of RCSS. The talk revealed how reading could shape and mould a human being in their life. He also distributed the prizes for the winners of various competitions conducted as part of the event.
READER’S RETREAT 2024
The Department of Library & Information Science and Languages jointly conducted Reading Week Celebrations READER’S RETREAT 2024 from 19 _ 21st June 2024 as part of the National Reading Day of June 19th. Various competitions including quiz, essay writing, spell bee, bookmark making, cover page design, puzzle, know your library, just a minute and reel competition were conducted as part of the event. Students from various departments actively engaged in the competitions and won prizes
An Industry Interaction program was conducted by the department on 16th August 2023 in order to make the students aware of their career and professional oppurtunities. Mr. Surendran Cherukodan (Asst. Librarian) of Cochin University of Science and Technology was the resource person of the session. The students of the department actively engaged in the interaction and was able to clarify their doubts regarding the profession.

The Department of Library and Information Science in cooperation with the Department of Physical Education of the college had celebrated the National Sports Day in the commemoration of Hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand on 19th September 2023. Live performances of various sports and games are conducted by the students.
The book entitled “Librarian’s Companion to Legal Literacy” jointly authored by Dr. Joseph I Thomas and Asst. Prof. Neethu Mohanan was officially released by Dr. Binoy Joseph. The book helps librarians to update their levels of legal literacy. The book elaborates the need and significance of various State and National laws in the profession.
BLISc and MLISc students with faculty members visit Infant Jesus Convent Orphanage Ochanthuruth, Vypin .Set a library for them and donate uniform and other Educational Equipments.
Department of Library and Information Science in association with Fr. Mosses Library, Celebrating National Library Week by conducting Panel Discussion, Speech Competition and also organizing a Chart Presentation in College Court Yard with the theme Kerala Culture. Information Regarding 14 Districts displayed in different Charts. For panel Discussion, Ranjith K U from Outreach was the Moderator.
Department of Library and Information Science in association with Fr. Moses Library celebrated 22nd Reading Week on 27th June 2017 at Golden Aureole Hall. The event was name as “Blossom of Reading” and inaugurated by the distinguished guest Sri. M Swaraj (MLA, Tripunithara). Sri. M Swaraj made an attractive speech about the importance of reading and the role of books in developing human knowledge. Various competitions are conducted in relation with the reading week celebrations and the prizes for the winners were distributed by the Honorable MLA in the function. A Book Exhibition is also conducted as part of this Celebration.
In Connection with National Librarians Day, Department of Library & Information Science and Fr. Mosses Library opened a library facility for the children (Rhythm of Reading) at St. Mary’s Convent Orphanage, Ernakulum on August 9th, 2016. The theme was: “Donate a book-Inspire a child”.
Department of Library and Information Science in association with Fr. Mosses Library organized Literature Book Exhibition in connection with the birthday celebration of Dr. S. R Ranganathan, Father of Library Science on August 12th.
Department of Library and Information Science and Fr. Moses Library jointly organized the Reading Day Celebration in connection with the remembrance of Shri. P.N. Panicker, Father of Library Movement in Kerala. The function will be held on 21st June 2016 at Golden Aureole Auditorium at 2.00 P.M. Shri. Pramod Raman, Young writer, News Anchor in Malayala Manorama was the Chief Guest of the programme.A debate titled “Social Media and Change in Reading among Youth” lead by Mr. Joshy Varghese (DDU-GKY Mobilization Head) was also organized during the occasion. Students conducted various competitions such as elocution, poetry recitation, Quiz Competition, skit etc.
Department of Library and Information Science conducted National Librarians Day celebration at Golden Aureole Auditorium, Rajagiri College of Social Sciences. Famous Poetess Ms. Aryambika S V (Kendra Sahitya Academy Award Winner), who inaugurated the function. National Librarians Day is an annual event in the India dedicated to the celebration of libraries and librarians. The inaugural event was held on Aug 12, 2015. S. R. Ranganathan, who is known as “Father of Library Science in India”, was the first person one who identified the real need of libraries and library science education in our country. India celebrates August 12 as Librarians Day in his honor.
