Mathew T. John is a social work educator whose interests lie in understanding the complex relationship between individuals, communities, and the social structures that shape their lives. His areas of interest include Mental Health, Community Development, Tribal Studies, Social Identities, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI), and the intersections of caste, class, and gender in contemporary society.His teaching is rooted in dialogue, reflection, and critical engagement. Rather than viewing learning as a one-way transfer of knowledge, he seeks to create spaces where students can question, discuss, and connect classroom concepts with lived realities. His classes frequently draw from literature, cinema, music, theatre, case studies, and contemporary social issues, encouraging students to engage with ideas from multiple perspectives.
He is passionate about mentoring students and fostering curiosity, empathy, and social responsibility. He believes that social work education should not only equip learners with professional knowledge and skills but also cultivate a deeper understanding of people, communities, and the pursuit of a more just and inclusive society.
Beyond academia, he is actively involved in music and faith-based engagements. As a singer-songwriter and music producer, he travels extensively across India and internationally, participating in gatherings, conferences, and conversations that explore faith, culture, community, and the human experience.
